Do you make cakes? Or only cupcakes?
Yes we make celebration cakes as well as cupcakes. We understand that sometimes, because we're called Hand Crafted Cupcakes, people may think that we only make cupcakes. And we have considered changing our name to Hand Crafted Cakes.
However cupcakes do have a special place in our heart.

More about the name and the reasons why we are still called Hand Crafted Cupcakes, rather than Hand Crafted Cakes
When Laura started the business, she had a vision.

After years of her sons coming back from children's birthday parties with squashed bits of cake in a party bag, or slicing up her own work of art and putting it in a party bag, she felt a) it was a bit messy, and b) when the cake got home, no-one could tell what the original cake had looked like!

Laura had also been to weddings, and observed that there can be a long delay between the bride and groom ceremonially cutting the cake, and it actually being served.

Laura felt that for both children's parties, and weddings, cupcakes could be better:
-
For children's parties, the cake could be put in a pod, and taken home in a party bag, neat and tidy, and the decoration on top fully intact, so that it was clear what the theme had been
-
For weddings, there could be a small top tier cake for the bride and groom to cut, and then all the guests could instantly help themselves. And if there is a separate evening party, there would still be a stack of fresh, perfect cupcakes for the evening guests to enjoy and admire - it's just that there would be less of them.

So when Laura and Dave got married - Laura filled 2 stands with cupcakes, each individually decorated with a beautiful champagne bottle. And baked 2 small top tier cakes.

In the following years, Laura's husband Dave was running a company near Cambridge. Like many companies, Dave's business had developed a routine of having a cake for each person's birthday. However, like with children's parties and weddings, after the office team sang happy birthday, there would then be the awkward cutting of the cake at someone's desk, handing out slices to be eaten in the office, dropping crumbs everywhere, whilst someone rushed to get some plates and napkins. Leaving a pile of crumbs by the birthday person's desk! And what flavour will most people like!? And what if the birthday person doesn't like that flavour?

So Laura started baking cupcakes for each person's birthday. Dave would come up with a theme related to that employee's hobbies or interests outside work. So it created a nice personalised gift to each staff member, with the added benefit that after singing "Happy Birthday", each person could grab a cupcake of a flavour that they liked (after giving the birthday person first choice, of course!), and either eat it there and then with the case to catch the crumbs, or take it back to their desk grabbing a plate on the way (usually!).
Ultimately, cupcakes go in and out of fashion. Large, statement, celebration cakes always have their place. And we love creating cakes of any size as a work of art.

The great thing is that each cake becomes its own mini sculpture. And sometimes 1 cake is all you need.
So you don't need to spend a fortune, sometimes 1 or 2 cupcakes with a very personal and intricate decoration on top is all that's needed. It may still take 1 to 2 hours, or more, to create a beautiful cupcake topper.
100 individually decorated cupcakes would cost a fortune - a large cake can be more cost effective.
However whether it's just serving one person, or if a large number of people need to be served, cupcakes give an interesting option, that can be adjusted how many have a completely custom designed topper, and how many can be simple cupcakes, with minimal or no topper. Mixing and matching in this way, we can create amazing statement pieces, serve lots of people, or just a few people, without the time and complexity of cutting a cake. And the mess is reduced.

And one extra benefit of cupcakes - gravity is rarely an issue, because the decorations on top are small. Although instead we have the challenge of getting the detail right, at miniature scale.

So the bottom line is - yes, we mostly do cakes. And we're delighted to make showstopping cakes.
However we're equally happy to create a delicious cupcake with a beautiful individual miniature decoration on top. That single cupcake can still be a work of art - it may be very expensive as an individual piece of cake, but as an individual, personal sculpture, that conveys your thought and care for someone, it can be very cost effective.
